The Hardiman Research Scholarship offers the opportunity for individuals who are eligible to pursue postgraduate studies. Scholarship supports basic research in the world-class;

The Information Systems PhD scholarships are awarded as follows:
1. Successful applicants must confirm acceptance of the award and its conditions during the period specified in the letter of notification of award of the scholarship. If a candidate does not accept, the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate next in rank;
2. After receiving the acceptance of the prize, the University of Pavia:

• send a prepaid travel ticket to Italy and provide for the travel expenses back to the developing country. Visa requirements will be care of the candidate, and will be reimbursed upon presentation of appropriate receipts;
• provide the candidate with the scholarship according to the final decision of the Commission: monthly instalments of 1.000 Euros each (the number of instalments assigned to each successful candidate will be decided by the Commission);

The European Information Systems PhD Program in Computational Logic (EPCL) is run jointly by four of the leading European universities in the field:
•Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy),
•Technische Universität Dresden (Germany),
•Technische Universität Wien (Austria), and
•Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal).
Further international universities, research organizations and enterprises which contribute to Computational Logic or apply results from it are involved as associated partners: The Simon Fraser University (Canada), the Universidad de Chile, the National ICT Australia Limited (NICTA), and several companies. The transport sector contributes with more than 20% of the total emission of CO2 and therefore there is a huge potential in even small reductions of the energy consumption of cars.

Information Systems PhD position in Ecosystem Services Quantification

Job description

The Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW) focuses on the national and international research fields of the life sciences, health sciences, environmental sciences and earth sciences. FALW offers world-class teaching in a range of Bachelor and Master programmes.

The section of Earth Sciences and Economics has been established recently in FALW. Biogeochemical processes at the Earth’s surface are heterogeneous and have multiple dynamics and interrelationships. As these processes change, they generate new economic and governance challenges, whilst natural and social processes interact differently in specific environments. Integrating this diversity and complexity requires a scientific approach in which societal and environmental needs, economic incentives and governance are taken into account. The section of Earth Sciences and Economics at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences sees such integration as its main task. Our aim is to better understand the spatial and temporal patterns of linked natural and economic processes at the Earth’s surface, and thus help improve decision-making and natural resource management. We carry out such research in close cooperation with our colleagues in adjacent disciplines. We will use ‘ecosystem services’ as our framing perspective and focus on exploring spatial patterns in ecosystem services provided by existing landscapes and catchments.

Requirements

The PhD is expected to develop a multi-layered, spatially explicit accounting system for European catchments linking valued services to landscape elements that provide these services. Hydrological raster models will probably form the working basis, but flexibility still exists in methods and conceptualisation.

Improved Methods for the Preparation of Fluorinated Drugs Scholarships

Approximately 20% of drugs and 40% of agrochemicals currently on the market have at least one fluorine atom in their molecular structure. Hence, fluorinated molecules are of prime importance to the fine chemical industry. Accordingly, we intend to develop new methods to introduce fluorine atoms onto molecules, using transition-metal catalysed activation of otherwise inert carbon-hydrogen and carbon-fluorine bonds. This new field of research hold promise for exciting discoveries.

Funding will be available for 3.5 years and will cover University tuition fees at the UK level and provide the standard tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £13,290 p.a. and subject to annual increase). In addition, a 3-month placement at an AstraZeneca research site will be scheduled within the course of the training. The successful candidate will be trained in a broad variety of new techniques in the newly refurbished Organic Synthetic Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Liverpool (£4.5 M), which offers an outstanding research environment. Working under the supervision of Dr. C Aïssa and an AstraZeneca co-supervisor, postgraduates engaged is this programme will be optimally prepared to their future career in industry or academia.

Microwave Electronics Laboratory’s strategy to increase system related research is now clearly visible in the results for 2009. Beside our traditional work on semiconductor devices and circuits, we are now demonstrating more system oriented results for future communication systems and remote sensing. Most of our work is project oriented together with other universities, companies and institutes, where Microwave Electronics Laboratory is responsible for hardware research and development.

Job description

The main research objective for the PhD student position is to study all aspects of phase noise in communication systems, all the way from how phase noise can be measured and modeled, to how to make system simulations including phase noise, and how to counteract the negative effects on the communication system performance using signal processing.

Required qualifications

You should have a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar, with a focus on digital communications, signal processing, or microwave electronics and high grades in the core courses. Some experience in the described fields are advantageous. Furthermore, an interest in interdisciplinary work with researchers and engineers from other fields is essential, as are skills in simulation techniques and mathematical analysis. You should be fluent in English, have good collaboration skills, and be able to communicate your results in writing and in presentations. Teaching experience is an advantage.

A PhD student position is an appointment that offers the opportunity to obtain a PhD degree. With a PhD degree in this area, you will be in great demand from Swedish as well as international industry, and you will have a very good basis for further academic research as well. The position is for a period of maximum five years. Up to 20% of this time will be used for undergraduate teaching and other departmental work, and the remaining part is spent on completing the research and courses required for a Ph.D. degree. A monthly salary is paid. The position can commence during August, 2010.
